Every brand is scored on the same six pillars: value, ingredient quality, nutrition, transparency, availability and customer sentiment. Prices feeding the value pillar are editorial estimates, checked against retail listings.

Lenses, not opinions
Each award is a defined filter over the index, such as highest overall score, highest-scored fresh format, or top value score among widely stocked kibble. The leader through the lens wins.

The deciding score goes on the badge
Most lenses rank on the overall score. 2 of the 7 rank on the value pillar instead, so those badges print the value score and name it, rather than showing an overall score that played no part in the result.

Awards move with the scores
When a score changes materially, after a recipe change, a pricing shift or new transparency information, the affected awards are re-derived rather than left standing.

Nothing is for sale
There are no entry fees, submissions or sponsored placements. We currently earn nothing from links on this site; if we join an affiliate program in future, affected pages will disclose it and commissions will have no bearing on scores or awards.

No. Every award is derived directly from the published scores in our index using our 100-point methodology. There is no entry fee, no submission process and no sponsorship arrangement. The winner of each award is simply the highest-scoring brand through that lens, and the same score appears on the badge.
Each award is a defined lens over the same index: highest overall score, highest-scored fresh food, top value score among widely stocked kibble, and so on. We apply the lens to the published scores and the leader takes the award. There is no separate judging panel, so any reader can re-derive every winner from the scores on this site.
Because that is the score that decided the award. Most lenses rank on the overall score out of 100, but the two value awards rank on the value pillar, so the badge prints the value score and names it. Printing an overall score on an award won on value would show a number that had no part in the result.
Awards move with the scores. When a brand's score changes materially, for example after a recipe change, a significant pricing shift or new transparency information, the affected awards are re-derived from the updated index. The current winners reflect scores as at August 2026.
Because awards are lenses over the same index, a brand that leads several lenses wins several awards. The highest overall scorer can also be the highest-scored fresh food, for instance. We would rather show that honestly than spread awards around to make more brands look like winners.
