Petzyo

Petzyo is a genuinely transparent, Australian-made brand that pairs single-protein kibble with raw BARF in one flexible subscription, making it a strong everyday option for owners who value local sourcing and clean labels. It sits at the premium end on price and is mostly sold direct or through Petstock rather than the big pet retailers, so cleaner value can be found elsewhere if budget and in-store availability are the priority.

Petzyo is an Australian-owned, Melbourne-based brand built around a direct-to-consumer subscription model, offering both single-protein dry kibble ("Kibble That Counts") and frozen raw BARF patties ("Raw Royalty"). Recipes lean on named meat meals, legumes and a long superfood blend, with most kibble lines grain-free and formulated to AAFCO/PFIAA all-life-stages standards. It earns strong loyalty for ingredient transparency, Aussie sourcing and the convenience of repeat delivery. The main trade-offs are a premium price point and limited shelf presence beyond its own site and Petstock.

The detail

What actually separates Petzyo in our index

Petzyo is privately owned by its Australian founder, David Latimer, based in Melbourne and made in Australia. Two things separate it from the twenty brands in our index. It is one of only two, with Scratch, listed in both dry and raw, so kibble and frozen BARF patties come from one subscription rather than two suppliers. Its 88 out of 100 for transparency sits fourth, behind Scratch and Frontier Pets on 95 and Lyka on 91.

The first ingredient on every Petzyo kibble we index is a named meat meal: kangaroo meat meal, salmon and ocean fish meal, chicken and turkey meat meal. The raw patties lead on kangaroo meat itself. All three kibbles are grain-free, formulated for all life stages, and sit in a narrow band of 27% to 30% protein and 11% to 12% fat, so switching within the range is straightforward. Ingredients score 85 and nutrition 84, both above the middle of the index without topping it.

What Petzyo costs, and where that changes

On our editorial estimates, the three 8kg kibble bags run $61.95 for chicken and turkey, $65.95 for kangaroo and $67.95 for salmon and ocean fish, or $7.74 to $8.49 per kg AUD. Worked out for a 15kg adult dog, that is $2.32 to $2.55 a day. The 5.4kg Roo's Clues raw patties are the outlier at $56.95, $10.55 per kg, or $3.16 a day, so the raw side costs about 84 cents a day more than the cheapest kibble bag.

Where you buy changes the figure. Petzyo appears at one of the ten retailers we track, Petstock, and on all four indexed products the Petstock price is exactly $3.00 above the direct estimate: $64.95, $68.95, $70.95 and $59.95. That is the cost of shelf pickup, and part of why availability scores 66 and value 70 while transparency reaches 88. Petstock's own pricing score is 70, so a price match, a repeat order discount or a sale is usually what closes the gap.

Who Petzyo suits, and who should look elsewhere

The clearest case for Petzyo is a dog that suits a novel protein. On the same editorial estimates, the kangaroo kibble rates 85 at $8.24 per kg and $2.47 a day, while Scratch's sensitive kangaroo 8kg bag, the nearest like-for-like, is $14.62 per kg and $4.39 a day. For an active dog, the chicken and turkey bag carries the highest protein in the range at 30% and the lowest price at $7.74 per kg, under the $8.45 per kg on Black Hawk's 20kg Adult Chicken & Rice. Not veterinary advice.

Skip it if the weekly shop is where you buy dog food. With one stockist and availability at 66, Petzyo is a plan-ahead purchase rather than an aisle grab; the top value score in our index belongs to SavourLife on 78, stocked at five of the ten stores we track. Skip the raw side if freezer room is tight, since the 5.4kg patty boxes arrive frozen. Overall 83 with sentiment at 89, second only to Scratch on 90, reads as a well-liked brand held back by price and reach.

What we like about Petzyo, and what we do not

What works

4
  • 100% Australian made and owned, with ethically sourced local ingredients
  • Single-protein recipes that suit dogs with sensitivities or food intolerances
  • Full ingredient lists and guaranteed analysis published openly for every recipe
  • Flexible subscription with the option to mix dry kibble and raw BARF

Watch-outs

3
  • Premium pricing, especially compared with supermarket and value brands
  • Mainly sold direct or via Petstock, so harder to grab off the shelf at major chains
  • Frozen raw patties need freezer space and a little prep planning

The fit

Who it's for

Best for

  • Owners who want Australian-made food on a convenient repeat delivery
  • Dogs with sensitivities that do better on single-protein, novel-protein recipes

Look elsewhere if

  • You want the lowest price per kilo or a supermarket-aisle pickup
  • You have no freezer space for the raw BARF side of the range

Lyka

Super-premium · Strong

Lyka is a genuinely premium, transparent fresh-food subscription that does the homework for you: vet-formulated, human-grade, portioned to your dog and complete and balanced across all six recipes. The main trade-offs are cost and the subscription-only, freezer-space model rather than anything to do with the food itself. Best for owners who want a research-backed fresh diet and are happy to pay for it; cleaner-label value is available elsewhere if budget is the priority. Not veterinary advice.
