Brand hub

Petzyo

Petzyo is an Australian-owned, Melbourne-based brand built around a direct-to-consumer subscription model, offering both single-protein dry kibble ("Kibble That Counts") and frozen raw BARF patties ("Raw Royalty"). Recipes lean on named meat meals, legumes and a long superfood blend, with most kibble lines grain-free and formulated to AAFCO/PFIAA all-life-stages standards. It earns strong loyalty for ingredient transparency, Aussie sourcing and the convenience of repeat delivery. The main trade-offs are a premium price point and limited shelf presence beyond its own site and Petstock.

The detail

Who makes Petzyo, and what independent ownership gets you

Petzyo belongs to no pet food conglomerate. It is a privately owned Australian company founded by David Latimer, run from Melbourne, Victoria, and its food is made in Australia rather than offshore. The same name sits on the business, the recipes and the delivery box, so a sourcing question or a recipe change traces back to one Melbourne company rather than a licensing arrangement under a multinational parent. For a buyer weighing brands, that is the meaningful distinction: you are dealing with the maker itself, not a label a larger group acquired to fill a premium slot.

What the company discloses is measurable. We score Petzyo 88 out of 100 for transparency, behind only its 89 for customer sentiment, because every recipe is sold with a full ingredient list and a guaranteed analysis published openly, and each label leads with an animal it is willing to name, from kangaroo through to salmon and ocean fish. The company also describes its local ingredients as ethically sourced, which fits the Australian-made positioning. An 88 is strong without being the highest mark in our index, so treat it as a brand that shows its working, with a little headroom left on disclosure.

Two formats, four SKUs, one size each: the shape of the range

Kibble That Counts is the dry line, and every recipe of it we index comes in exactly one size, an 8kg bag. The three recipes are Chicken & Turkey with Superfood Extras at $61.95, Kangaroo, Sweet Potato & Superfood Extras at $65.95, and Salmon & Ocean Fish with Green Lipped Mussels at $67.95, all editorial estimates, which puts the per kilo spread at a narrow $7.74 to $8.49. Chicken & Turkey is the anchor recipe: it is the cheapest way into the brand and, at 30% crude protein, also the strongest protein figure Petzyo lists across the range.

Raw Royalty is the frozen half, represented in our index by Roo's Clues, a 5.4kg box of kangaroo BARF patties at $56.95. That is a smaller ticket than any kibble bag but a higher rate per kilo, $10.55 on the same estimates, so the raw format is the premium way to feed the brand. The specification barely moves across formats: every SKU is grain-free, formulated for all life stages, and leads with a declared meat, while the kibble trio holds a 27% to 30% protein and 11% to 12% fat band. There is no wet food and no separate puppy or senior line in our index. Not veterinary advice.

Buying Petzyo: direct first, Petstock as the fallback shelf

Petzyo runs on direct orders from its own site, with a flexible subscription that can put dry bags and frozen raw boxes in the same repeat delivery. Buying it therefore takes a little planning: the next order goes in before the current bag runs out, and the Raw Royalty patties need freezer space cleared before the box arrives. That structure is exactly what our availability score of 66 out of 100 measures. It is the lowest of Petzyo's six pillars, well under the brand's 83 overall, and it reflects reach rather than quality: the food is simply not sitting on most shelves.

The single retail doorway in our data is Petstock, which lists all four Petzyo products we track; none of the other nine retailers in our index carries the brand, and neither do the grocery aisles. Treat Petstock as the stopgap channel: useful when subscription timing slips and you need a bag today, though its shelf range varies between stores, so a quick phone call beats a wasted drive. Petstock itself rates 74 out of 100 in our retailer index and its everyday pricing leans high, so on the same editorial estimates each of the four Petzyo lines costs $3.00 more on its shelf than bought direct.
