02 · Definitions

What an affiliate link is, in plain terms.

Worth setting out properly, because the arrangement is common enough that readers reasonably assume every review site is on one. Here is how it works, and where we sit against it.

  1. A reader clicks a link and buys something.

An affiliate link is a link that pays a website a small commission when a reader clicks through and makes a purchase. It is a standard commercial arrangement, sometimes called a referral program, used by many independent review and comparison websites to fund their operations.

  2. The retailer pays the commission out of its own margin.

The commission is paid by the retailer, not added to the bill, so it does not change the price at checkout and it does not add any cost to what the reader pays.

  3. Today, none of that happens here.

Dog Food Reviews does not currently participate in any affiliate program. Every outbound link on this site, including links to the brands we score highest, is a plain link: no commission, no payment on purchase, no commercial tracking arrangement of any kind.

  4. The rest of this page is the standing policy.

These are the rules that already bind us, and that will govern any affiliate program this site joins in future. They are published in advance so they cannot be written to suit a deal after one is signed.

Where multiple retailers stock a product we link to the one offering the best everyday value, informed by our own pricing across 10 Australian retailers. That rule holds regardless of commercial relationships: if the best-value retailer for a product has no affiliate program, we link to them anyway. Prices change, so if you find a case where our link is not pointing to the best-value option, let us know and we will review it.

03 · Independence

What a commission would never move.

Our editorial scoring is completely separate from any commercial consideration, now and in future. A brand without an arrangement is scored on exactly the same criteria as a brand with one.

Why it is separated

A score you can argue with.

The 100-point scores assigned to brands and retailers are based on our published methodology, never on whether a brand has a commercial relationship with us. All 20 brands in the index go through the same six weighted checks.

That is what makes a score something you can check rather than something you have to take on trust. If the model is published and the inputs are published, a ranking you disagree with is an argument about evidence, not about motive.

04 · If it ever changes

How a disclosure would reach you.

Four guarantees that would apply the day a program went live. They are published now, while nothing is at stake, which is the only time a rule like this is worth writing.

  1. A notice near the link, not buried in a footer.

Every page with an affected link would carry a clear disclosure notice near the relevant button or link.

  2. Paid links marked, and only paid links.

Paid links would be marked for search engines with a sponsored rel attribute. We will never label a link as sponsored while no paid relationship exists.

  3. This page updated first.

The status at the top of this page is the record. It changes before anything else on the site does.

  4. The score stays where it was.

A brand cannot improve its score by entering an affiliate arrangement, and a brand that pays us nothing can still rank first in our index.

Reading a link before you click it

Two shapes, one rule.

Buttons on this site are shaped by where they go, not by who benefits. The shape is consistent on every page, so you can tell the two apart before you click rather than after.

  • A filled pill with a straight arrow stays on Dog Food Reviews.

  • An outlined pill with a diagonal arrow leaves our site. Today every one of them is a plain link that earns us nothing.

05 · Corrections

Disclosure only works if it is accurate.

A transparency page that is quietly out of date is worse than no page at all, so the correction route for this page is the same one that applies to our reviews.

If we get it wrong

We correct it and say so.

If we ever get a disclosure wrong, whether a missing notice, a stale status on this page, or a link labelled incorrectly, we will correct it promptly and note the correction, under the same corrections process that applies to our reviews. Reports from readers are welcome.

Checking a specific link

Ask us about any link on the site.

If you are unsure about the status of a specific link, email us at hello@dogfoodreviews.com.au and we will confirm it.

06 · The limit

What this site is not.

The last thing on a transparency page should be the limit of what we can tell you, not another claim about how careful we are.

What we do

Dog Food Reviews is a value and comparison resource. Our scores reflect value, ingredient quality, transparency and availability, read from published labels and from prices we check across 10 Australian retailers by hand.

What we do not do

Nothing on this site constitutes veterinary, medical or individual nutritional advice, and no score here is a clinical assessment of whether a given food suits your animal. Every dog is different.

Before you change a diet

Speak to a vet, not to a ranking.

Always consult a registered veterinarian before making significant changes to your dog's diet, particularly if your dog has an existing health condition, a known allergy, or is at a sensitive life stage such as puppy, senior, pregnant or nursing.

As of August 2026, Dog Food Reviews holds no affiliate, sponsorship or commercial arrangement with any brand or retailer it covers, and earns nothing from any link on this site. The presence or absence of a commercial relationship will never have any effect on a brand's score or its position in our index.
