The detail

Where Black & Gold is actually sold

Black & Gold is Metcash's house brand for IGA and the independents, and IGA is the only retailer in our index that stocks it. The single product we price, the Adult Dry Beef & Vegetables 8kg, sits at an $18.00 shelf estimate: $2.25 per kg, the lowest figure in our index. All prices on this page are AUD editorial estimates, not retailer quotes.

IGA is a Metcash supplied network of independently owned supermarkets, so range and pricing move store to store. In our retailer index it scores 72/100 on pricing but only 43/100 on range, with delivery that is patchy and often in-store only. The cheapest Black & Gold near you is therefore whatever your local IGA prints on the shelf ticket this week.

One bag size, and what it does to the economics

Most budget brands reach their per-kg floor with a big bag. Black & Gold does it with a small one: the 8kg Beef & Vegetables is the only size we hold, yet its $2.25 per kg undercuts the 18kg bags of every other supermarket house brand on our estimates: Aldi's Julius at $2.50, Woolworths' Baxter's at $2.61, Coles' Woofin' Good! at $2.72.

The trade-off is bag life. At an estimated $1.00 a day for a roughly 15kg adult dog, an $18.00 bag covers about 18 days, so restock trips come more than twice as often as with the rivals' 18kg bags. With no larger size in our index, buying down the per-kg price with a bulk bag is simply not an option here.

No autoship, no member price: the IGA reality

The levers this site usually recommends are missing here. In our index IGA runs no autoship, no member pricing and no price match, and the Black & Gold 8kg holds a single everyday estimate of $18.00. The retailers that do run those programs, Pet Circle and Petbarn among them, do not stock Black & Gold at all, so there is no cheaper week to wait for.

If a recurring discount matters, change brand rather than timing. IGA also carries Black Hawk in our retailer index, and that food attracts subscription pricing elsewhere: the 20kg Adult Chicken & Rice lists at $156.00 on Pet Circle's subscription against $165.00 everyday, and $149.00 on Peto's plan. Nothing comparable applies to Black & Gold, whose price is whatever your local store charges.

Spending up from $2.25 per kg

Nothing in our index undercuts $2.25 per kg, so cheaper means sideways or up. Sideways buys little: Julius, Baxter's and Woofin' Good! cost 25 to 47 cents more per kg for the same cereals and meat meal first ingredient, and none of the four house brands scores higher than 50/100 overall. Black & Gold itself scores 44/100, with ingredients and transparency both at 40.

The move that changes the answer is upward. ProBalance Adult Chicken 18kg runs an estimated $1.50 a day, $89.00 at Budget Pet Products: 50 cents more a day for a 62/100 product against this bag's 48/100. SavourLife Original Adult Chicken 18kg is about $2.00 a day and rates 83/100, the brand 75/100 against Black & Gold's 44. That extra dollar a day buys the biggest quality jump on this page.
