The quick answer

$3.19 to $4.39

per day for a ~15kg adult dog on full bowls · roughly $22 to $31 a week · editorial estimates, not Scratch's own pricing

Those figures are our editorial estimates, built from per-kg pricing of $10.62 to $14.62 across Scratch's 4 kibble recipes, every one of them sold as an 8kg bag. Scratch sells direct by subscription rather than through shops, so there is one price per bag and no retailer spread to shop around: the estimates here are the benchmark to hold that one price against. As a rule of thumb, smaller dogs typically cost less per day than our 15kg benchmark and larger dogs more, because portions scale with the dog.

The pricing model

How Scratch pricing works

Scratch is a subscription product, not a shelf product, but unlike fresh-food subscriptions the unit is still a priced bag. Three things decide what you pay.

  1. The recipe sets the bag price

Scratch sells 4 priced kibble recipes, each as an 8kg bag, and our editorial estimates run from $84.95 to $116.95 a bag. The spread is the recipe, not the bag: the novel-protein kangaroo recipe carries the top estimate and the turkey and beef all-rounder the lowest.

  2. Direct-only means one price

Scratch is sold by subscription from its own website rather than in shops, so there is no retailer spread to shop: no shelf ticket, no cheapest-at-retailer column, one estimated price per bag. That cuts both ways. You cannot hunt a discount across stockists the way you can with retail kibble, and you also do not pay a different price depending on which shop you walked into.

  3. Subscription sets the rhythm

Bags arrive on a flexible recurring delivery rather than off a shelf, so budgeting Scratch means thinking in cost per day and days per bag rather than watching for in-store sales. Unlike Lyka, which prices each dog individually through a quote flow, Scratch's unit is still a bag with a price on it: the subscription changes how it reaches you, not how it is priced.

Unlike a flat-priced range, recipe choice moves Scratch's daily cost by about $1.20 at our benchmark: the recipe, not the bag size, is what sets the bill.

One bag size, four prices

Every priced Scratch recipe comes as the same 8kg bag, so the range has no small-bag premium or bulk-bag discount to arbitrage: the only bag-to-bag difference is the recipe, at $84.95 to $116.95 a bag. Dividing each bag price by its estimated daily cost, every bag lasts roughly 26 to 27 days for a ~15kg dog, which is why the per-day figures track the per-kg ladder so closely.

Scale it to your dog

All of the above sits on our ~15kg benchmark. A smaller dog eats less, so a bag lasts longer and the daily cost falls below our range; a larger dog does the opposite, and the gap versus mainstream kibble widens as weight rises. These are editorial estimates for comparison, not feeding guidance: portion your dog from the pack directions and your vet's advice, not from this table.

The honest read

Scratch is priced above the middle of our index: the index median is $2.70 a day at our benchmark and every Scratch recipe sits above it. Big-bag Black Hawk works out around $2.10 to $2.50 a day, Petzyo's subscription range starts lower at $2.32, and even fresh-food Lyka's estimated range of $2.68 to $2.98 lands below Scratch's. What the money buys is the range's disclosed ingredient percentages, a transparency score of 95/100 that is the joint-highest in our index, and Australian sourcing.

The caveats

Every figure here is an editorial estimate built on our ~15kg benchmark and indexed pricing, not a live quote. Retail kibble prices move with sales, subscription prices change at the seller's end, and larger dogs widen every gap on this page. Confirm current pricing with each brand or retailer before deciding, and see the full dog food price index for every product we price on the same benchmark.

The levers

Ways to keep the cost down

Four levers that genuinely move the daily number. None of them make Scratch cheap against supermarket kibble, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

  1. Start with the turkey and beef recipe

Grain-Free Turkey & Beef carries the lowest per-kg estimate in the range ($10.62/kg against $14.62/kg for the sensitive kangaroo grain-free recipe), which is roughly $1.20 a day at our benchmark. Unless your dog needs a novel or single protein, it is the cheap way into the range.

  2. Think in days per bag, not bag price

Our estimates put every 8kg bag at roughly 26 to 27 days of feeding for a ~15kg dog, so a dearer bag is not automatically dearer feeding if your dog is small. Run the cost-per-day figure for your dog's size before judging the sticker.

  3. Use the subscription's flexibility

Scratch's subscription is flexible rather than fixed, so match the delivery cadence to how fast your dog actually empties a bag. Paying for food that stacks up in the cupboard is the quietest way a subscription gets expensive. Check current delivery options with Scratch, as plans change.

  4. Compare it against Petzyo before committing

Petzyo is the closest like-for-like rival: another Australian subscription kibble, with indexed estimates of $2.32 to $3.16 a day at the same benchmark. Our Scratch vs Petzyo comparison puts the two side by side.

Our overall score
86/100
Value pillar
72/100

Scratch sits in the premium tier and is priced like it: every recipe lands above our index median of $2.70 a day, and its value score of 72/100 reflects a food that charges for its transparency and sourcing rather than competing on price. The direct-only model means the price you see is the price there is, with no retailer spread to shop. Whether the food justifies the money is a different question to what it costs: our Is Scratch worth it? verdict takes that on directly.

Not veterinary advice. Prices are editorial estimates: confirm current pricing with Scratch, and speak to your vet before changing your dog's diet.
