The detail
The daily maths: $1.90 a day against the same Petbarn shelf
Leaps & Bounds Grain Free Adult 15kg is the only bag we hold for the brand: $109 AUD at Petbarn, or $7.27 per kg and about $1.90 a day for a 15kg adult dog on our editorial estimates. The two grain-free 15kg bags beside it cost more. SavourLife Grain Free Adult Lamb runs $9.93 per kg and about $2.30 a day, Black Hawk Grain Free Adult Chicken $10.60 and about $2.50.
The honest gap is 40 cents a day against SavourLife and 60 cents against Black Hawk, roughly $146 and $219 a year for one medium dog. What the extra buys shows in the ratings: the Leaps & Bounds bag rates 51 out of 100 in our index, while both of those alternatives rate 84. At $109 the bag covers around 57 days of feeding.
Where $7.27 per kg genuinely earns it
Availability is its strongest pillar at 80 out of 100, earned in a narrow way: one retailer, but a bag on the shelf in every Petbarn in the country, with dry, wet and treats under the same label. Value follows at 64 out of 100, level with customer sentiment as its second-strongest pillar, and price and value carries 25 of the 100 points on its own.
The sharper claim is the format. Of the 14 grain-free dry bags we price, Leaps & Bounds is the cheapest per kilo: $7.27 against $7.74 for the next one, Petzyo Kibble That Counts Chicken & Turkey 8kg, and $9.58 for Providore. If the brief is grain-free at the lowest per-kg cost, nothing in our index sits under it, and it is Australian made.
When $1.90 a day is still not worth paying
Ingredients score 56 out of 100 and transparency 54, its two weakest pillars, and the panel shows why. The first listed ingredient is chicken meal rather than a named whole meat, and protein is declared at 25 per cent against 28 in the SavourLife grain-free bag and 30 in the Black Hawk. Whether that suits your dog is a question for your vet: this is not veterinary advice.
The other trade-off is the shelf itself. We track Leaps & Bounds, a Greencross house brand, at Petbarn and nowhere else, while Black Hawk and SavourLife each appear at five retailers.
