Brand hub

Baxter's

Woolworths' long-running supermarket house brand and one of the cheapest feeds per kg available. It sits near the bottom of our index for a clear reason: cereal-led panels rather than named meat, minimal sourcing detail behind the label, and meat content among the lowest in the range. The price is the entire pitch: there's little ingredient story to weigh against it.

The detail

Owned by the supermarket that sells it

Baxter's is not an independent pet food company. It is Woolworths' own house label, owned by the supermarket, sold through no other retailer, and made in Australia according to our index. That structure shapes everything else on this page: the business that commissions the recipes also controls the only shelf they appear on, sets the sole price, and decides how much the label reveals. There is no standalone brand company behind it to put questions to, so accountability for what goes into the bag sits entirely with a supermarket's private label operation.

The transparency pillar puts a number on what that arrangement discloses: 42 out of 100, the joint lowest of Baxter's six scores alongside ingredient quality. Behind the Australian made claim there is minimal sourcing detail on the label, and our Woolworths retailer notes record the same pattern from the other side, with the supermarket publishing little about where its house food is made or how it is sourced. For a buyer, the practical reading is simple: this is a brand you purchase on price and convenience, because the paperwork to judge it on anything deeper has not been published.

Three formats on the label, one recipe in the index

On the shelf the Baxter's label stretches across dry food, wet food and treats. In our food index, though, the range resolves to a single tracked recipe: Baxter's Dry Dog Food Chicken and Vegetables in an 18 kilogram bag, an adult formula listed at an estimated $47, which works out to $2.61 per kilogram. That bag is the anchor of the range in every sense. It is the key product on our brand card, it carries the product rating of 50 out of 100 that sits beside the brand's overall 46, and every price figure we publish for Baxter's traces back to it.

A single SKU means the per kilogram spread that normally maps a brand's tiers does not exist here. Baxter's pricing in our data starts and ends at that estimated $2.61 per kilogram, with nothing smaller than the 18 kilogram bag for a first try and no premium sub-line sitting above it. The recipe declares 18 per cent protein and 10 per cent fat with cereals and meat meal at the head of the ingredient list, and it is an adult food; our index holds no Baxter's puppy or senior formula. Whether any of that suits your dog is a question for your vet, not a review site.

Buying it means buying it at Woolworths

Buying Baxter's is a grocery decision rather than a pet shop one. Woolworths is the sole stockist in our retailer index, the brand sits on Woolworths' own private label list, and no specialist chain or online pet retailer we cover lists it. The bag therefore travels the same two routes as the rest of the trolley: lifted off the shelf during the weekly shop, or added to a standard Woolworths grocery delivery, which our retailer data prices from about $5. If a particular store has none on the shelf, there is no second retailer to try, because the channel begins and ends with one supermarket.

The availability score of 72 out of 100, the clear high point of its six pillars, describes the shape of that distribution: one chain, but the chain with the largest supermarket footprint in the country, so a bag is rarely far from home even with a single seller. Exclusivity also settles the price question before it is asked. Our data records no price match at Woolworths and no pet-specific autoship anywhere that stocks Baxter's, so the estimated $47 shelf figure is the national price. The one lever left is the delivery fee, which falls away once a grocery order clears Woolworths' $100 threshold. All prices here are editorial estimates.
